1. Visit Vianden Castle 🏰 – Things to Do in Luxembourg
If there is one castle you should not miss in Luxembourg, it is Vianden Castle. Perched high above the charming town of Vianden, this impressive medieval castle looks like something from a fairytale.
As you approach, take your time to enjoy the views over the Our Valley. Then, wander through the castle rooms and discover its fascinating history. Afterwards, explore the narrow streets of Vianden or take a peaceful walk along the river.
Moreover, you can easily visit Vianden without a car. From Luxembourg City, take a train to Ettelbruck, then continue by bus 181 to Vianden. The total journey usually takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on your connection. Public transport is completely free, so you can enjoy this beautiful day trip without adding transport costs to your budget.
2. Discover Schengen 🇱🇺🇫🇷🇩🇪
Schengen, a small village with a surprisingly important place in European history. Located on the Moselle River where Luxembourg, France, and Germany meet, Schengen is a fascinating place to experience the idea of a borderless Europe.
The Schengen Agreement was signed here in 1985, helping to pave the way for easier travel between European countries. Today, you can experience this history for yourself by visiting the unusual three-country border on the Moselle, where you can look across the river and see France and Germany from Luxembourg.
Afterwards, take a slow walk along the river and explore the monuments around the Place des Étoiles. Look closely at the Columns of Nations, where stars and national symbols represent Schengen member states. Can you guess which countries they represent? It is a fun little detail that makes the visit more interactive.
Finally, take some time to enjoy the peaceful vineyards and Moselle views. Schengen may be small, but it offers a unique combination of European history, three-country borders, and slow riverside scenery.
3. Explore Remich by the Moselle River 🍇
Remich is a charming town on the banks of the Moselle River. Known as the “Pearl of the Moselle”. It is surrounded by vineyards and is a lovely place to slow down for a few hours.
Start with a walk along the 3-kilometre riverside promenade. Take in the views across the river, watch the boats pass by, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Afterwards, wander through the old town and explore the small streets, cafés, and local shops.
Remich is one of the best places in Luxembourg to experience the country’s wine-growing region. The vineyards stretch along the hills above the Moselle, creating beautiful views as you walk or cycle through the area. You can also stop at a local winery for a wine tasting if that interests you.
If you have more time, consider taking a boat trip on the Moselle. It offers a different perspective of the vineyards and riverside towns. Alternatively, simply find a quiet spot by the river and enjoy the scenery.
4. Discover Wintrange and Its Vineyards 🍷- Things to Do in Luxembourg
Wintrange is a peaceful wine village in Luxembourg’s Moselle Valley. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, it offers a quieter side of the region away from the busier riverside towns.
Take a gentle stroll through the streets and keep an eye out for the small touches that tell the story of the local wine culture. You might even find wine-inspired artwork in unexpected places, such as the railing along the steps of the village church.
Wintrange is also home to Domaine Viticole Schumacher-Knepper, a family-run winery with a long tradition of producing quality Luxembourg wines. If you have time, arrange a tasting and discover some of the wines made from grapes grown in the surrounding Moselle vineyards.
The best way to experience Wintrange is simply to take your time. Look around, notice the details, and let the village surprise you.
5. Visit Wasserbillig and Cross the Border by €1 Ferry 🇱🇺🇩🇪
Wasserbillig, in eastern Luxembourg, where the Sauer and Moselle rivers meet right on the German border. In summer, the riverside is especially lively, with many cyclists enjoying the paths along the water.
One of the most enjoyable things to do here is take the little Sankta Maria II ferry across the Moselle to Oberbillig in Germany. The crossing is short, but you can step into another country, explore the German village, and perhaps stop for a traditional German Wurst before returning to Luxembourg.
The current one-way ferry fare is €1 for passengers aged 10 and over, while children up to 9 travel free. If you bring a bicycle, the cyclist and bike cost €1.80. Prices and operating times can change, so check the official ferry website before your visit.
Back on the Luxembourg side, you can stop at Cauris – Saveurs d’Afrique, at 7 Esplanade de la Moselle, for African cuisine right beside the river. It is a lovely option if you fancy something different after exploring the riverside.
Wasserbillig is a great place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. Watch the boats, see cyclists passing by, cross the border by ferry, and enjoy the unusual experience of visiting two countries within the same short outing.
6. Explore Esch-sur-Sûre and Its Castle Ruins 🏰
Esch-sur-Sûre is one of the most picturesque villages in Luxembourg. Tucked into a bend of the Sûre River and surrounded by steep green hills, the village feels almost hidden in the countryside.
Start by wandering through the narrow streets and stone houses. Then, make your way up towards the ruins of Esch-sur-Sûre Castle, which rise above the village. The climb is worth it for the beautiful views over the river, rooftops, and surrounding hills.

7. Relax in Remerschen Haff Réimech Nature Reserve – Things to Do in Luxembourg
Remerschen is a peaceful village in the Moselle region, close to the Luxembourg–France–Germany border. It is best known for its beautiful Haff Réimech nature reserve, one of Luxembourg’s most important wetland areas.

Afterwards, you can continue towards the village and vineyards surrounding Remerschen. The landscape changes with the seasons, so even a simple walk can feel quite different throughout the year.
If you enjoy cycling, Remerschen is also a great place to explore by bike. The quiet countryside and nearby Moselle paths make it easy to combine nature, villages, and vineyards in one relaxed day.
Give yourself time here. Remerschen is less about ticking off attractions and more about enjoying Luxembourg’s quieter side.
8. Visit a Real Wine Garden 🍷 – Things to Do in Luxembourg
For a more relaxed taste of Luxembourg’s wine culture, stop at Wäigaart Aler Bar, a beautiful open-air wine garden run by Domaine de Schengen. It sits right at the edge of Remerschen, along the road towards Wintrange, surrounded by the vineyards of the Moselle Valley.
This is not the kind of place where you need to rush in, taste a wine, and leave. Find a seat outside, order a glass of local wine, and enjoy the views around you. The setting makes it easy to slow down and appreciate the landscape that produces the wine in your glass.
The wine garden is particularly enjoyable on a warm day. You can sit among the vines, watch people cycling past, and simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Moselle countryside.
If you are already exploring Remerschen and Wintrange, Wäigaart Aler Bar makes a lovely stop between the two. It is a chance to experience Luxembourg wine in a simple, local setting rather than only seeing it on a shop shelf.
9. See the Schiessentümpel Waterfall in Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland
Deep in the Mullerthal Region, known as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, you’ll find the beautiful Schiessentümpel Waterfall, also called the Schiessentümpel Kaskade.
The waterfall itself is not very large, but the setting is beautiful. Water flows beneath a small stone bridge, surrounded by mossy rocks, trees, and woodland. It is one of those places where it is worth putting your camera down for a moment and simply taking in the surroundings.
The real highlight, however, is the landscape around it. Follow the nearby hiking trails and you’ll discover narrow paths, dramatic rock formations, little streams, and peaceful forest scenery. Some sections take you between huge sandstone rocks, giving the Mullerthal its distinctive character.
The Mullerthal Trail covers around 112 kilometres and is divided into three main routes. You don’t need to hike the entire trail to experience the region. Choose a shorter section, take your time, and enjoy the little details you might otherwise miss.
10. Discover Luxembourg’s Brewing Tradition – Things to Do in Luxembourg
If wine is not your thing, don’t worry. Luxembourg has a strong beer tradition too. Brasserie Nationale is the famous brewery behind Bofferding and Battin, two well-known Luxembourg beer brands.
Located at 2 Boulevard J-F Kennedy in Bascharage (Käerjeng), the brewery is a great stop for beer lovers who want to discover more about local brewing. If tours or tastings are available during your visit, it can be a fun way to experience another side of Luxembourg’s food and drink culture.

If you are looking for a clean, comfortable and more affordable place to stay outside Luxembourg City, consider De Brauhotel in Bascharage.
Located directly opposite Brasserie Nationale, this modern hotel has 55 rooms, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and 24-hour reception. It is also well connected to Luxembourg City by public transport, which is free across Luxembourg.
For us, staying here turned out to be much cheaper than the hotels we found in Luxembourg City centre, while still giving us a comfortable and pleasant place to sleep. If you don’t mind staying outside the capital, it can be a great option for keeping your Luxembourg trip within budget.
