Mindful Things to Do in Ninh Binh: Rivers & Temples

There are places that impress us with their beauty, and then there are places that invite us to feel something a little deeper. The mindful things to do in Ninh Binh, in northern Vietnam, are about more than admiring spectacular scenery – they are about slowing down, connecting with nature, and appreciating the quiet moments along the way.

Here, limestone mountains rise above peaceful waterways, small boats move slowly between towering cliffs, and ancient temples sit among trees, gardens, and weathered stone paths. The scenery is dramatic, yet the experience can feel surprisingly gentle. You don’t always need to climb a mountain or reach a famous viewpoint to appreciate it. Sometimes, all you need is a little time to look around.

If you’re wondering how to experience this beautiful region at a slower pace, this guide explores memorable activities, from taking a traditional boat ride and visiting historic temples to discovering quieter corners of the landscape and enjoying the atmosphere after dark.

Ninh Binh is not simply a destination to photograph. It is a place to practise slowing down, paying attention, and allowing a journey to unfold without needing to control every moment.

Why visit Ninh Binh? – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

Located in northern Vietnam, Ninh Binh is known for its dramatic limestone karsts, winding rivers, rice fields, caves, and historic temples. The landscape is often compared to Ha Long Bay, but here many of the limestone formations rise from green fields and inland waterways rather than the sea.

The region offers several different experiences within a relatively compact area. You can spend the morning rowing between cliffs, visit a peaceful pagoda in the afternoon, and finish the day watching the countryside change colour as the light fades.

Ninh Binh is also a destination with historical significance. The nearby Hoa Lu area was the capital of Vietnam during the 10th and early 11th centuries, and the landscape around Trang An is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage property for its combined natural and cultural value.

How long should you stay? One full day can cover a major attraction and a temple, but two or three days will give you more flexibility. If you want to explore without rushing from one place to another, I would recommend allowing at least two or three nights.

1. Take a traditional boat ride through the limestone landscape

One of the most memorable things to do in Ninh Binh is to explore the spectacular waterways of Trang An by traditional rowing boat. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a remarkable landscape of limestone mountains, hidden caves, peaceful valleys, and ancient temples. As you glide along the water, you’ll pass through narrow cave passages, emerge into beautiful open valleys, and discover cultural sites tucked between the mountains.

A boat trip is also a lovely opportunity to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. There is no need to rush. Simply sit back, enjoy the scenery, and let the journey unfold.

Which Trang An Boat Route Should You Choose? – A Complete Guide for First-Time Visitors

Trang An offers four different boat routes. Each follows a different path through the landscape, combining caves, temples, and natural landmarks in its own way.

If this is your first visit, choosing between them can be confusing. They all offer beautiful scenery, but the experiences are not identical. Some routes take you through more caves, while others offer a different combination of cultural sites and mountain scenery. There is also a shorter option if you have less time.

We explored Trang An over two days, taking Route 1 on our first visit and Route 3 on the second. Having experienced two different journeys, we could appreciate how much there is to discover here.

Here is what you can expect from each route.

Local tour guides in blue uniforms and traditional conical hats prepare sampan rowboats along the stone riverbanks of the Trang An boat pier in Ninh Binh, framed by a rustic wooden pavilion and large trees.

Route 1: The most extensive cave and temple experience

  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours
  • Caves: 9
  • Spiritual and cultural sites: 3
  • Main highlights: Toi Cave (Dark Cave), Sang Cave (Light Cave), Nau Ruou Cave, Ba Giot Cave, Seo Cave, Son Duong Cave, Khong Cave, Tran Cave, and Quy Hau Cave. The route also includes Trinh Temple, Tran Temple, and Khong Temple.

Route 1 is an excellent choice if you want to explore as much of Trang An’s underground landscape as possible. With nine caves along the way, it offers the greatest variety of cave passages among the four routes.

Each cave adds something different to the journey. You’ll travel through dark, enclosed passages beneath the limestone mountains before emerging into open valleys and peaceful waterways. Some sections require you to duck beneath low rock formations, making the cave passages an adventure in themselves.

The route also includes several cultural and spiritual stops. Tran Temple and Khong Temple are particularly interesting for visitors who want to discover more about the area’s history and religious traditions.

What makes Route 1 different? It combines the largest number of caves with several cultural sites. The experience is varied, with plenty of changes between underground passages, open landscapes, and temple visits. Choose this route if you love exploring caves, enjoy discovering historic sites, and have around three hours to experience Trang An.

Route 2: A balance of caves, temples, and mountain scenery

  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours
  • Caves: 4
  • Spiritual and cultural sites: 3
  • Main highlights: Lam Cave, Vang Cave, Thanh Truot Cave, Dai Cave, Cao Son Temple, Suoi Tien Temple, Voi Valley, Dia Linh Mountain, Kim Quy Mountain and Vu Lam Palace.

Route 2 offers a balanced combination of natural scenery and cultural heritage. Rather than focusing on a large number of caves, it takes you through four cave passages and several important temples and historic landmarks.

One of the highlights is Cao Son Temple, associated with one of the guardian deities of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. You’ll also visit Suoi Tien Temple, connected with the worship of Quý Minh Đại Vương, a legendary general.

Between the cultural stops, you’ll pass through beautiful valleys and admire the distinctive limestone formations around Voi Valley, Dia Linh Mountain, and Kim Quy Mountain. The route also includes Vu Lam Palace, a historic site associated with the Tran Dynasty.

What makes Route 2 different? It offers a stronger balance between cultural landmarks and natural scenery. Compared with Route 1, there are fewer caves, leaving more room to appreciate the temples and surrounding landscape. Choose this route if you enjoy learning about local history and spiritual traditions while taking in the beautiful scenery.

Route 3: A journey through Trang An’s impressive long cave

  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours
  • Caves: 3
  • Spiritual and cultural sites: 3
  • Main highlights: Dot Cave, Van Cave, Dai Cave, Trinh Temple, Suoi Tien Temple, Voi Valley, Dia Linh Mountain, Kim Quy Mountain, and Vu Lam Palace.

Route 3 is particularly appealing if you want to experience one of Trang An’s most impressive natural features: Dot Cave.

At more than one kilometre long, Dot Cave is described as the longest cave in Trang An. Passing through such an extensive cave is a different experience from exploring several shorter passages. You’ll spend more time beneath the mountain before emerging into the daylight and the spectacular landscape beyond.

The journey also includes several cultural landmarks, including Trinh Temple and Suoi Tien Temple. Outside the caves, the route takes you past dramatic limestone formations and through scenic valleys. Vu Lam Palace adds another historical dimension to the experience.

What makes Route 3 different? Its main attraction is Dot Cave. While Route 1 offers more caves overall, Route 3 gives you the opportunity to explore one particularly long cave passage. It also combines this with impressive mountain scenery and cultural sites. Choose this route if you enjoy dramatic natural formations and would rather experience one exceptionally long cave than visit a larger number of shorter ones.

Route 4: A shorter introduction to Trang An

  • Duration: Approximately 1.5-2 hours
  • Caves: 4
  • Spiritual and cultural sites: 2
  • Main highlights: Lam Cave, Vang Cave, Thanh Truot Cave, Dai Cave, Cao Son Temple, Goc Gao and Vu Lam Palace.

Route 4 is the shortest option, making it a practical choice if you don’t have enough time for a three-hour boat trip.

Despite its shorter duration, it still offers plenty to enjoy. You’ll pass through four caves, admire the limestone mountains, and have the opportunity to visit cultural sites along the way.

The route shares several highlights with Route 2, including Lam Cave, Vang Cave, Thanh Truot Cave and Dai Cave. However, it follows a shorter itinerary and includes fewer cultural stops.

What makes Route 4 different? It offers a shorter version of the Trang An experience. You still get to explore caves and enjoy the scenery, but spend less time on the water. Choose this route if you have a busy itinerary, are travelling with someone who prefers shorter excursions, or simply don’t want to spend three hours on a boat.

So, Which Trang An Boat Route Should You Choose?

There is no single best route. It really depends on what interests you most and how much time you have available.

  • Choose Route 1 if you love exploring caves and want the greatest variety of cave passages, combined with cultural and spiritual sites.
  • Choose Route 2 if you prefer a balanced journey through caves, temples, valleys and limestone mountain scenery.
  • Choose Route 3 if you want to experience the impressive, kilometre-long Dot Cave and enjoy dramatic natural formations.
  • Choose Route 4 if you’re short on time but still want to experience Trang An’s caves, waterways and limestone scenery.

A Few Practical Things to Know Before Boarding

Each boat can accommodate up to four passengers, seated in two rows of two. If you’re travelling as a couple and prefer a more private experience, you can buy four tickets to have the boat to yourselves. That’s what we did. We didn’t want to spend a few hours sitting in the back row, looking at someone else’s back. Having the whole boat to ourselves meant we could relax, take photos, and enjoy the scenery without feeling cramped. It costs extra, of course, but for us, the added comfort and privacy were worth it.

Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable clothing. Some cave passages have low ceilings, so be prepared to duck as you pass through.

Check the current route options and ticket arrangements before boarding. You can find further information on the Ninh Binh Tourism Department website.

Our Experience: Two Boat Trips Through Trang An

We explored Trang An over two days, taking Route 1 on our first visit and Route 3 on the second. We loved having the chance to discover different corners of the landscape rather than trying to fit everything into one trip.

Trang An Boat Tour: Route 1 – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

Our first journey took us through a beautiful landscape of green limestone cliffs, quiet waterways, and hidden caves. We particularly enjoyed the moments when the boat emerged from the darkness of a cave into the open valley. The contrast was wonderful.

We also stopped at several places along the way. Bao Hieu Pagoda caught our attention with its peaceful pathway, old trees, and waterside setting. Inside Nau Ruou Cave, we spotted traditional wine jars, a small detail that added an interesting glimpse into local traditions.

Here are some moments from our first journey:

View from a rowboat passing through a dark cave opening, looking out toward a towering green limestone mountain valley on the Trang An Route 1 tour.

Trang An Boat Tour: Route 3 – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

The following day, we returned for another journey. One of the most striking parts was the landscape around the area associated with Kong: Skull Island. The rugged limestone mountains rising straight from the water created an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

We also noticed a difference in the atmosphere. Route 3 was considerably busier than Route 1 during our visits. There were more boats on the water, which made some parts of the journey feel less peaceful. Even so, the scenery was impressive, and we were glad we had experienced both routes.

Here are some moments from our second journey:

2. Hang Múa Viewpoint: A Different Perspective on Ninh Binh

After exploring Trang An from the water, visiting Hang Múa Viewpoint offers a completely different way to appreciate Ninh Binh. From the top of Ngoa Long Mountain, you can look across the Tam Coc valley, where winding rivers weave between green rice fields and dramatic limestone peaks. It is one of the region’s most famous viewpoints and a wonderful place to appreciate the scale and beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Mindful things to do in Ninh Binh: High-angle aerial look down at the jagged rocky peak of Mua Cave mountain, showing the stone trail crowded with tourists leading to the small pagoda at the Hang Mua Viewpoint summit.

Climbing to the top – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

Reaching the viewpoint involves climbing approximately 500 stone steps up the mountainside. The staircase is steep in places, so wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and take your time, especially in hot or humid weather. Along the way, the views gradually open up, and near the summit you’ll find the famous stone dragon and panoramic views across the valley.

The climb can be tiring, but there is no need to rush. Stop when you need a break, enjoy the scenery, and remember that the experience is about more than reaching the top.

When to visit Hang Múa Viewpoint – mindful things to do in Ninh Binh

Early morning and late afternoon are often recommended for visiting Hang Múa, when temperatures are more comfortable, and the light can be beautiful for photography. We visited in the late afternoon, hoping to see the golden sun illuminate the limestone mountains and rice fields, but a thick layer of smog and haze obscured the view. During the two weeks we spent travelling around Vietnam, we hardly saw the sun, despite visiting outside the rainy season. It was disappointing, but it also reminded us that travel rarely unfolds exactly as we imagine – and that sometimes, there is beauty in the experience itself, even when the views don’t meet our expectations.

The viewpoint can get busy, so arriving early may help you avoid some crowds. The rice fields change from vibrant green to golden shades throughout the seasons, and if photography is important to you, checking air quality as well as the weather forecast may help you choose the best day. Even when the sky isn’t clear, the climb can still offer a memorable perspective on Ninh Binh.

A moment to pause – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

Hang Múa is famous for its panoramic views, but there is more to discover than the climb to the summit. At the foot of the mountain, peaceful ponds, traditional bridges, landscaped gardens, and winding pathways invite you to slow down and explore. Sometimes, the quiet corners we discover along the way become just as memorable as the places we came to see.

When you reach the top, pause before reaching for your camera. Look across the valley, follow the river winding between the fields, and simply be present. During our visit, the smog obscured the spectacular views we had hoped for, reminding us that travel doesn’t always unfold as we imagine. Perhaps that is part of its beauty. We cannot control the weather, the path ahead, or every experience life brings us, but we can choose how we respond. Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys teach us to release our expectations, appreciate what is in front of us, and understand that the value of a journey is not always found at the summit, but in who we become along the way.

A Mindful Reframing Exercise: Challenging the Way You See Things

The next time an experience doesn’t go as planned, try changing the question you ask yourself.

Instead of asking, “Why didn’t this happen the way I wanted?”, ask:

  • What did this experience teach me?
  • What did I discover that I wasn’t looking for?
  • Is there something valuable here that I haven’t noticed yet?

You don’t have to turn every disappointment into something positive. Simply give yourself room to see the experience from another perspective. Perhaps the weather hides the view you had hoped to see, but encourages you to explore a place you might otherwise have missed. Perhaps a missed opportunity leads you towards an experience you would never have planned. The disappointment is still real, but it doesn’t have to define the whole experience.

Sometimes, changing the way we look at something doesn’t change the experience itself, but it changes what we take away from it.

3. Discover Everyday Spiritual Life in Ninh Binh, Vietnam

While exploring Ninh Binh, take time to visit a small, local temple. Step away from the famous attractions. These places offer a glimpse into the everyday spiritual life of Vietnamese people.

When I entered this temple, I was surprised to find two men sitting inside, chatting and smoking cigarettes. It wasn’t the quiet, solemn atmosphere I had expected. Instead, I witnessed a small moment of everyday life. For the local people, this was not simply a place to visit. It was part of their familiar surroundings.

Travel often challenges our expectations. We arrive with our own ideas about how places should look and feel. But the reality can be quite different. These moments invite us to pause, observe, and question our assumptions. They remind us that we are visitors in someone else’s world.

4. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital: A Journey into Vietnam’s Past

Hoa Lu Ancient Town: An Evening by the Water – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

If you have some extra time in Ninh Binh, we recommend visiting Hoa Lu Ancient Town. It is especially lovely in the evening. The town sits beside Ky Lan Lake. Traditional-style buildings, small bridges and colourful lanterns line the water.

Hoa Lu reminded us of Hoi An, with its lantern-lit streets and charming architecture. It has a similar atmosphere, but feels much less touristy. (We’ll be sharing more about Hoi An in a separate post soon!)

We recommend visiting during the day and staying until after sunset. This way, you can enjoy two different sides of the town. During the day, take your time to wander through the streets and admire the traditional-style wooden houses. As evening falls, the lanterns light up. Their colours reflect across the lake, creating a beautiful atmosphere.

Although its name suggests an ancient settlement, Hoa Lu Ancient Town is actually a modern cultural attraction. It recreates traditional Vietnamese architecture and the atmosphere of an earlier period. The entrance is free, so you can explore at your own pace.

A boat ride on Ky Lan Lake – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

One of the nicest ways to enjoy the area is from the water. You can take a traditional rowing boat around Ky Lan Lake. Alternatively, find a spot beside the lake and simply watch the boats pass by. In the evening, the illuminated buildings and colourful lanterns create beautiful reflections.

According to the official Ninh Binh Tourism Department’s 2026 price list, the standard boat ride costs 100,000 VND per adult. The VIP boat costs 150,000 VND per adult. Children have separate fares. Check the prices at the ticket counter before boarding, as they may change.

We particularly enjoyed the atmosphere around the lake. There is something lovely about watching the lanterns glow, and the boats move slowly across the water. You don’t need to plan much here. Just take a walk, enjoy the surroundings, and let the evening unfold.

Try Vietnamese young rice yoghurt – Mindful Things To Do in Ninh Binh

While exploring the town, look out for Sữa Chua Cốm Non. This popular local treat consists of two layers: a soft, sweet layer of cooked green young rice (cốm) at the bottom, topped with creamy, tangy white yogurt (sữa chua).

We recommend giving it a try if you enjoy discovering local flavours. It is a refreshing little treat and a lovely way to experience something different from the usual desserts. And if you’re wondering what else to eat during your trip to Vietnam, keep an eye out for our upcoming post. We’ll be sharing more Vietnamese dishes and local treats worth trying!

5. Where to Stay in Ninh Binh: Finding a Clean and Comfortable Place

If you’ve read our guide on How to choose your perfect accommodation, you’ll know we usually have a few simple rules when booking a place to stay. However, Vietnam is an exception!

Finding clean and comfortable accommodation can be surprisingly difficult, especially if you’re used to European standards. We learned this the hard way. Several times, beautiful photos and excellent reviews turned out to be misleading. Some photos seemed to date back to the hotel’s opening. Others simply didn’t match the rooms we found. We also came across reviews that raised questions about their reliability.

Especially memorable was our Hanoi experience. We literally ran away from one hotel. The smell of damp and bleach was the strongest we’ve ever encountered. The walls looked like something straight out of Stranger Things…

Thankfully, good places do exist. You can find clean, comfortable accommodation without spending a fortune. We’ll share the places we actually stayed in as our Vietnam journey unfolds. Expect honest reviews and recommendations!

Our Stay at Lotus Hotel in Ninh Binh

We stayed at Lotus Hotel during our time in Ninh Binh, and we were happy with our choice. The hotel was simple but clean. It also had a small outdoor swimming pool, which was a lovely bonus after a day of exploring.

The staff was very, very nice and welcoming. A fresh breakfast was also included in the price. We especially recommend trying the banana pancakes! We only discovered them on our last day and liked them so much that we’ve brought the recipe inspiration home and still make them quite often.

Sometimes, you don’t need anything fancy. A clean room, friendly people, and a good breakfast can make all the difference. Lotus Hotel offered just that. We would happily recommend it if you’re looking for a simple and comfortable place to stay in Ninh Binh.

A Final Thought: The Beauty of What We Never Expected

Ninh Binh reminded us that life doesn’t have to be perfect to leave us with something beautiful.

We arrived dreaming of golden sunsets and breathtaking views. We packed high-SPF sunscreen but never used it. The smog hid the landscapes we had travelled so far to admire.

We become so attached to how we imagine life should look that we overlook what it actually offers. Spending so much time capturing perfect moments – how many photographs do we revisit after sharing them online?

The memories that stay with us are most often the unexpected ones.

Only later did we realise that one of our smallest discoveries in Vietnam held a lesson that reached far beyond the kitchen. Its simple ingredients seemed to echo the journey itself: not everything was as we had imagined, yet somehow, everything came together to create something beautiful.

The rice flour, plain and almost tasteless, like the hazy skies that obscured our views. A tiny pinch of salt, the difficult moments that add depth to an experience. A fresh egg held everything together, the unexpected encounters that connect the pieces. Finally, a ripe banana brought some sweetness: the little discovery that made everything worthwhile.

Somehow, a little piece of Ninh Binh found its way into our mornings. What began as a chance discovery on the other side of the world slowly became part of the familiar rhythm of home. A reminder that the places we visit don’t always stay behind when we leave. Sometimes, they find a quiet place in our everyday lives, long after the backpacks have been unpacked.

We cannot always choose what life puts into our hands, but we can remain open to what those ingredients might become together.
